Photoelectric smoke sensing is very good at catching slow, smoldering fires, the kind that produce heavy smoke before open flame, common with electrical fires and overheated wiring. It is comparatively slower to react to a fast-flaming fire, where flame spreads quickly but smoke takes a moment to build.

Combining smoke detection with rapid heat-rise detection covers both fire patterns. The heat-rise element reacts to how fast the temperature around it is climbing, not just its current temperature, which catches a fast-flaming fire (a grease fire, for example) well before smoke alone would trigger an alert.

Because the sensor reports to the ADT monitoring center and can alert the local fire department automatically, it protects your home even when nobody is there to hear a local alarm, unlike a battery-only smoke detector that only helps people already inside.
